What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a common condition for many adults. It occurs in two stages: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gum disease is caused by built-up plaque and tartar on your teeth due to poor oral hygiene. Other health and lifestyle factors can increase your risk of developing gum disease. These factors include family history, smoking, diabetes, and hormonal changes such as those that occur during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.

Left untreated, gum disease progresses into its advanced stage, periodontitis. Periodontitis causes your gums to recede from your teeth. How is Gum Disease Treated?

At Smiles Dental Care, our periodontist can perform a variety of gum disease treatments to restore your oral health. The services we offer include:

• Scaling and Root Planing: Known as deep cleaning, our periodontist offers this procedure to the built-up plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth and tooth roots. First, we perform scaling on your enamel, and then we will perform a root planing to smooth the roots of your teeth. This will keep bacteria from adhering to your tooth roots and prevent future infection.
• Gum Graft Surgery: Our periodontist performs this simple surgical procedure to replace diseased gums with healthy tissue. This procedure reverses the effects of gum recession and promotes healthy tissue regeneration.

• Dental Crown Lengthening: Our periodontist performs this procedure to remove diseased gum tissue and expose more of the tooth for restoration. We can also offer this procedure to patients with “gummy” smiles, trimming away excess tissue and recontouring the gumline for a more attractive smile.
